[2004-08-23, day 12] Campsite below Syltran Lake
Early in the morning, at 06.00, it's time to get ready. The foot wear is still wet since yesterday’s rain. But during the nice breakfast, with a sunrise, Marco manages to dry them using the heat from the stove. Today it's a perfect day...

[2004-08-23, day 12] Syltran Lake
The route from the campsite to Syltran Lake is not clearly marked. But if you trek north and then turn east, you will find the route. Marco takes a short break at Syltran Lake. In the background the mountain Syltrankiolbashi (3806 masl) and Mukal (3888 masl) are clearly visible.

[2004-08-23, day 12] Syltran Lake
As told before, the map is not really in line with the real world. This is the proof. According to the GPS the altitude for Syltran Lake is approximate 3200 masl. Marco will use this proof later, his plan is to take a swim in the lake on the way back! This will then be a new record of high altitude swimming for the Team Hyperactive's members.

[2004-08-23, day 12] Syltran summit (3537 according to GPS)
After a nice trek in perfect weather Marco reached the Syltran summit. In the background we see Mount Elbrus.
From this point of view it looks like a good day for a summit attempt on Elbrus, but we know it's to windy and cold for this type of activities.
Anyway, we didn’t have the time because we must leave Terskol tomorrow morning.

[2004-08-23, day 12] Close to Shepherds hut
On the way down, Marco stopped for a swim in Syltran Lake. Temperature of 2 degrees in the water made the swim short. Later, the group of that Russian people passed by on their way up. The picture shows the part with the Shepard’s hut and the route (keep to the right if you don't want to walk on big rocks).

While Marco was on his way down, the other members spent some time in the hills close to Terskol. They find new friends very quickly, as seen on the picture. And yes, Altin is the one to the right (to be sure that we not offend the cows)!

For some unknown reason alpinists always take the chance to spend some time close to edge. Mattias, Maria, Yolanda and Altin having lunch at this fine rock.

All the members got together in the MBS hotel later this day. Marco decided to take a shower and then he packed all equipment for tomorrow's departure. The other decided to go horse riding. A long, nice trip that made them feel free, even in Russia. Mattias shows how to take control, to be the real... cowboy!

The last night - End of story?

[2004-08-23, day 12] Terskol
Well, this will be our last night together in Russia. We went to a restaurant to eat and drink, but not too much since we had to travel for many hours tomorrow (and some of us have to pack the equipment). This is the end of the story, but we maybe get back another day to finish what we have started.
