The night was windy and a lot of snow fell on our tents... in the early morning Yolanda and
Marco got up and removed it to keep the tents dry and to stop them from caving in too much.
Normaly the snow shall fell of if the tent is of good quality, have the right functions, proper
design and are correctly mounted. But some of this criterias was not fulfilled, unfortunately.
New tent models will be evaluated in the future.

[2004-08-20, day 9] At Priut 11

This ‘nice’ view, and an indescribable unpleasant odour, face you if you use this toilets at Priut 11.
But we are familiar to this type of things nowadays, nobody of us really cares about it anymore.

Not far away from our tents there was a lot of garbage dumped by some idiots. It was some broken bin bags
filled with old (partly moulding) bread, used tins and other old food and crap. It’s a real shame that some
people can’t realise that they are ruining the mountain with their dirty behaviour. However, one afternoon
two guys walked up to the bags and started to argue over them. Then, after a while when they thought nobody
was noticing them both started to go through the bags and, believe it or not, took some of the bread with
them! They sure must have been hungry... Another scary thought entered our mind when we noticed that
they were going back to one of the huts… Maybe they serve it to climbers that buy food in their restaurant!
Be aware folks...

Burned down to the ground

[2004-08-20, day 9] At old Priut 11
|
|
This is the inside of the old hut that burned down. Some climbers camps inside it since it gives
some protection from the wind. But this is one of the cooldest place to camp at since the stones
and the walls are much more cool then the snow (physics lesson in school about isolation and objects
with temperature preserve). Yolanda is having a look around on her way back from one of many water
gathering trips (a small stream of water from the glacier).

The weather is not as good as we were hoping for, but Mattias just smiles anyway. Maybe because of the bizarre situation... high altitude, bad weather during the night and misty and rainy in the morning, and we are still up here instead of down in Terskol where a nice cold beer awaits us.

In the year 1969 someone walked all the way up here to carve the face of his hero on a rock. The
Russian history shows its mark on the most unexpected places, even at high altitude.
Yolanda and Maria are trying to read the inscription with the help of a Russian phrase book (we
will not print their interpretation here, of respect to the Russian language).

Chaotic but cosy

Yolanda and Altin are having lunch roman stile (lying down). The tent is filled up with equipment, personal stuff and of course by themselves. Cosy, but it looked a little bit chaotic (according to the others). But Altin ensured that he and Yolanda had 100% control (we'll believe it when we'll see it...). By the way, the boil-in-the-bag food we used during this trip is made by Real Meal and it is really nice. You just pour some boiling water into it the bag, stir well and close it with the zip lock and after 5 minutes it is ready to eat.
